Many of us don't want to admit it, but it's true. Many Black women only feel beautiful or worthy when someone outside of our community says it's so. Which sux.

My hope is that we can truly stop feeding these "Why Black Women Are (insert criticism)" memes and start focusing on other, more important aspects of our beings. There were just so many MEN (both Black and White) banking off of tearing us down, and many of us fed into the patriarchal hype. I have been in grocery stores, only I and a black woman are the only African Americans. I can't even get eye contact. They are infatuated with white guys. Agreed, one of the benefits of integration is the freedom to choose a romantic partner, yet it is disheartening to be rejected by the women of my own race. I love southern black women, they still like black guys. On the West Coast, forget about it. Don't these black women understand what white people did to their ancestors? I've never liked white women ( for one thing, their hair looks like it doesn't smell good) but here in Seattle they are the only ones who will give me any play.  less

Firstly, thanks for the complimentary greeting! While people do have the right to pursue their personal dating preferences, in some cases that argument is myopic due the fact that some folks' personal aesthetic/preferences are shaped by Western ideals or by whatever prior issues/experiences they have had in their past or by insecurity. There's not a whole lot we can do about the superficial reasons WHY those people date interracially and refuse to do so intraracially or even why they do it while saying hateful things about men/women in their own community. In fact, it has absolutely nothing to do with you and as frustrating as it may be, I wouldn't take it personally or get upset... they're projecting. That's baggage I'd be glad not to take on...  less

That's their choice, it doesn't cause me to hate Black men, and they obviously have demons they need to slay, I don't get offended as much as I'm amused by it. I don't limit my options or harbor resentment either, because at the end of the day, my loyalty is to MYSELF and my own peace of mind. If I were you, I'd try cultivate relationships with women of color (despite your location) who DO value and appreciate your existence. You may want to do it via a dating site (like OKCupid) or Meetup.com, which is another great resource for finding like-minded folks for the myriad of activities near you! Good luck!  less

Also, a salute to brave Black women who either individually or in-tandem with notable Black male leaders, made strides throughout history and who're presently charting a new path, is in order. I think in general, folks (men and women) should stop fetishizing and exploiting folk and date freely (if they so choose to do so) genuinely, without needing to bash their own sistren and brethren. It's a nasty, vicious cycle that both parties need to stop doing. Peace!  less

Thanks for the feedback! While I understand that many stereotypes may originate from certain behaviors, I don't think it's fair that Black people... especially Black WOMEN have to shoulder the burden for the unsavory attitudes TV execs continue to broadcast on networks like VH1 and BET. I've written about this, but whenever White women display crass behavior, the perpetrators OR White women as an entire group are never judged as harshly as we are. They have the propensity to act like "savages" and to display unbecoming behavior too. The Kardashians have made a fortune off of acting... dubiously... in front of the cameras. I think the question we should be asking is why the media, Reality TV machine, and social media forums think it's OK to endorse/perpetuate stereotypes about Black women and use ugly language to reference...  less

In my opinion it has shined a bright light on the under cover racism that had been covered up in this country. Now we are starting to see how other countries see us. The television companies strive to keep the stereotypes going. You have to both "act black" and look as close to white as they can get you. We see that in movies all the time. What concerns me is that a lot of Blacks think that we live in a post racial society. Try talking or writing about this on another social network and see what happens. We cannot even bring up the point that there is still racial descrepencies in the United States. The first thing that comes out of their mouths is " Well, we have a black President now, so that shows how far we have come. It was not only black people who voted for him." I agree that we have to advocate for better ways to show what we as Black women represent in the Hip-Hop music world.  less
