Like Teneshia said, it is a “form” of derogatory categorizing and degrading. I don’t use it in such a way, because again, Blacks are “TAUGHT” to degrade themselves and many do not know where the term came from, but associate it to something run down, decrepit, etc. the N word is associated with it too… I would pick my battles and educate those I feel will learn from the past that “ghetto” was a Nazi term from Europe to categorize people in a negative light. Then let them deal with it… I do not feel that whites should use the term because if they “feel” so open about it coming out of their mouths then imagine what is running through their heads and their attitudes towards our children. I’m sure they would be offended by you calling a white child “trailer trash” www.wordreference.com/definition/trailer%20trash -trailer trash. ▷noun US informal, derogatory poor, lower-class white p...    less

One reason is that we as blacks bring somethings on ourselves, such as the word GHETTO that we embrace so much. We can't allow ourselves to get mad when someone else decides to use it around us. Another thing is that we are not the only people who live in the Ghetto. White folks has the trailer parks, and every other race has a slum area that they live in. I think that we are to sensitive at times, and sometimes things about us are true. Hell I was born and raised in the ghetto, and most of my family was, so if someone wants to call us ghetto, then more power to them. Ghetto does not mean black though, but at the same time, we have embraced the word and made it popular. Every race has ways of expressing themselves, but us black folks has to learn to loosen up because we love to pick and clown on people.  less

I agree Chinwendu, no matter the shade we are still all black and beautiful! Just as we didn't choose to be dark, they didn't choose to be light. Unfortunately, a lot of men prefer light skinned sisters because it's closer to white. And, unfortunately, our young sisters want to emulate what they see in videos, and do not know enough to be proud of who they are and what they look like. When their role models all wear long hair weaves, and the light skinned girls are the chosen ones, what else would they think? Do you know how many of my 5th grade girls wear weaves? How many I have to tell to keep their hands out of the white girls' hair, stroking it? I teach, so I see it every day, and I use my position to teach my babies to be proud of who they are.  less

They are so envious and intimidated because President Obama succeeding would force them to acknowledge the great lie and mental delustion they want to hold on to; some of them need to hold onto regarding skin color. All that the racists at heart are doing to cause havoc while President Obama is in office, is definitely planned work to try and make him look bad. No one ever agrees with everything a president does, President Obama is no different. But, the disrespect has long reached the level of injustice (again!). We see the truth... will not be brainwashed by the ones who is and have been selling this country down the drain...the greedy, hoarding, republicans and others. Those ones turned against America long before President Obama ever took office.  less

It's one of the largest drawbacks to the intellectual group as a whole. It's the reason that John Kerry lost the election, he was too intelligent and too socially awkward, ordinary Americans couldn't relate and didn't trust him. If you are intelligent, yet can't communicate, then it shows a serious restriction on that intellect. It was a hard bridge for me to gap, and even harder for my son. However I did it and my son is currently doing it. Getting good grades and not being a social pariah.  less

I just felt I had to say that for some reason. And by "acting white", I mean that there are some educated Black folks who side with the system and play active roles in oppressing Black children and by extension their parents (some of them are just on a power trip or what have you). I also meant to say that its not just grammar/the way we talk, sometimes after being trampled on and dehumanized in so many different ways, we just lose it when dealing with confrontations, particularly when it comes to the education system and how people treat Black children; sometimes its not something we are aware of. While I don't excuse the behavior, there's more to it than just acting out for some parents. I think you're right about parents dealing with teachers and administrators. Yes, I know some parents just "act a fool" and it doesn't help the situation at all, it only makes it worse for their child.  less

He said, "Only the assistant manger is my friend, and he's cool." Nothing happened, but he has taken my advice and toned down what he puts on FB.

It's Sunday, so this really shouldn't be the title of my post, but it fits so well. I thought of the title as I sat, in all places, in a church in Boston. I recently read an article about that children's book, "Go the  F*** to Sleep", and I think it ...

I will send my child to his room while I think about a fitting punishment for the misbehaviour. The most important thing is to exhibit self control. I will tell him, "look son, I'm very upset right now and disappointed in what you did, you need to go to your room and I'll be in there in a few minutes." I go outside for a moment, compose myself, and then I'll go spank his butt and explain why what he did was wrong, ask him why he thought it was alright to do, and then see that he understands what he should/could have done instead.  less

What about African, Caribbean, Latin and Afro-European literature? Our experiences will be always be limited if we take on the attitude of, nothing exists beyond our shores. Africans all over the world have so much to learn from and teach to, one another. First we'll have to acknowledge that we all fall under the category of Africans and we have to accept our family on the continent and the rest of the world and they'll have to accept us. There is an amazing amount of art being created all the time by US but if WE don't recognize it then we're losing our legacy. We all have to make more effort to develop ways to exchange and promote African arts among our fellow Africans and the rest of the world if we want to see our artists gain the recognition that they deserve.  less
