Personal Details

  • About Me I am from the leading edge of the Baby Boomer generation so I actually predate the internet. I was born and raised in rural South Jersey which included dirt roads, the outhouse, the ice box, preserves in the cellar, Saturday evening baths in the kitchen since there was no bathroom and no hot water and lots of family to share this with. Eventually one of my neighbors had a TV that I got to see sometimes. The first car I remember us having was a model T Ford that you could literally start with a hand crank it wasn't a new one. You get the picture. I've seen lots of changes over the years. I'm sure some of the other boomers out there know what I'm talking about. When I turned 4 years of age I could already read and I've been going strong ever since. I finished high school and after that I only took courses that I found interesting although I took a a lot of those. At this juncture, I am almost continually scanning the web for items of interest to people of African descent - including but not limited to history (modern and ancient), culture, news, social studies, arts, entertainment, health ..... Most of the books I get these days are audio books that I download from my library that I listen to when I'm walking the dog or going on road trips or in any waiting situation there is no down time and it's amazing the amount of variety that can be found. Oh yeah, did I mention that I tend to ramble? Sorry about that. :-)

What about African, Caribbean, Latin and Afro-European literature? Our experiences will be always be limited if we take on the attitude of, nothing exists beyond our shores. Africans all over the world have so much to learn from and teach to, one another. First we'll have to acknowledge that we all fall under the category of Africans and we have to accept our family on the continent and the rest of the world and they'll have to accept us. There is an amazing amount of art being created all the time by US but if WE don't recognize it then we're losing our legacy. We need to remember that the term "Black" is really refering to "African people". Not just "American Africans (north, south and central)" but Africans all over the globe. We also need to remember that no matter how Europeans try to spin it, none of the wealth of the Euro dominated countries would exist without Africa or Africans. Make no mistake. This is a discussion that we will have to have among ourselves, until we understand it very clearly. This is the importance knowing African history. Africans were responsible for much knowledge (technical and philosophical) that found it's way to Europe and Asia. So yes let's do remember our ancient history and don't let anyone convince us that it doesn't exist because of their ignorance.  less

His father was a church custodian and his mother a practical nurse. Highlights of his scholastic life included being selected as valedictorian of his high school class, earning his B.S. degree in Biology from the University of Cincinnati, and becoming the first African-American to be granted a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. While at Sumner High School Dr. Turner continued to publish. His publication rate of two articles per year exceeded most of his contemporaries working at colleges and universities. His achievements are made even more remarkable when one considers that he worked with unconventional organisms that required mastery of a wide range of rearing techniques. These animals included various species of ants, bees, cockroaches, crustaceans, moths, pigeons, spiders, and wasps. Dr. Turner also did work with plants. Moreover, many of his papers included investigations of seve...    less

This song is something that should have been out there already, alas, if Trayvon hadn't been taken from us so suddenly that evening in Florida we might not be listening to it today. As you listen don't think only of Trayvon Martin, take the time to reflect on the thousands of other young Black men, ...

Some of our comments appear to be limiting "Black literature" to "African American Lit". We all have to make more effort to develop ways to exchange and promote African arts among our fellow Africans and the rest of the world if we want to see our artists gain the recognition that they deserve.

As an example of the above discussion. Here is an account of Timbuctoo around 1787 or just 10 years after the American Revolution. This is prior to the existance of the country known as Mali. Then it was subject to the influence of the Haussa empire. I hear you loud and clear J Nicole. A name is everything.

Charles Henry Turner (1867 - 1923) Turner was born two years after the civil war on February 3, 1867 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Moreover, many of his papers included investigations of several species within the same manuscript. Actually his acheivements are very impressive, and he was very well known among his peers in spite of the fact that he didn't get a position in a college or university.
