  • About Me I'm an entrepreneur, journalist, blogger, live blogging and social media enthusiast who loves roller skating, dancing, traveling and Chicago and Black history. I am also interested in created a better community where I live so I share resources on my site, Shorty: Your Chicago South Side Resource and work with community leaders who tend to be "seasoned" citizens (they love me). I'm also trying to figure out the best way to give back to the young people in my community.

Actually, BWB was the most intimate conference I had ever attended. It's still growing so there were 300 -500 attendees on each day of the event, but everyone was SO nice. I have never been to such an event where nearly everyone offered to help in some aspect. I got there a day before the confrence and one of the presenters was having a Happy Hour event. I was about to rent a car and I saw two guys walking. They asked if I was going to the event. I said yes. And they told me I could go with them, even though they weren't driving. When we reached their friend who was driving, she said, "Oh sure," like we'd been friends forever. So, I saved money, met new people I adore and still keep in touch with, and had a blast. Another thing I loved about the connections made is we still keep in touch. That is the first event I've attended that people actually took a card and kept in touch. Very impressive. Ms. Wyatt talked about all of the women who have been physically, verbally and sexually abused and have been carrying the burden of silence themselves.  We all know women who were raised in single-parent homes headed by women with no father around to protect them or tell them how beautiful they are. And let's not forget the parents who are competing for attention from guys their daughters' ages because they are almost the same age. Like you, I see all the women doing desperate things (the what), but I don't know WHY they are doing what they do. Until that conversation takes place, we're judging and labeling based on our assumptions. So, yes we can claim to be as honest as we want, but until we know the underlying issues that are causing the actions, we are judging. I still judge. But I now wonder, "Why is she dressed like that?" firs...    less

But what's really unfortunate is that we are not trying to do better as a people. The first thing we all need to do is to turn off the TV. Secondly, we need to talk to each other instead of judging. And thirdly, we need to learn how to really love ourselves and stop looking at what other people have. Oh, how could I forget? We need to learn our history. If we read books like "When and Where I Enter: The Impact of Black Women on Race and Sex in America" by Paul Giddings or anything by the great Black people in history as well as the bible, we would have a better understanding of who we are and whose we are.  less

I would also add that I always hear Black folks throwing around the phrase "don't judge", but I think judging is often confused with honesty. Judging may be a part of some people's honesty and labeling people as one thing or another is more harmful than not talking to them, but it remains that you have to be honest about what you see and experience for there to be any real conversation and change.

All of them are interested in our votes, not our issues. What is the solution? I don't know. I do know that neither side really cares about us. And if black people don't wake up and see what's going on, there is going to be a huge gap between the haves and the have-nots. If they are keeping up with the news, they are making up a huge portions of the have-nots. So, now, what do we do?

What about African, Caribbean, Latin and Afro-European literature? Our experiences will be always be limited if we take on the attitude of, nothing exists beyond our shores. Africans all over the world have so much to learn from and teach to, one another. First we'll have to acknowledge that we all fall under the category of Africans and we have to accept our family on the continent and the rest of the world and they'll have to accept us. There is an amazing amount of art being created all the time by US but if WE don't recognize it then we're losing our legacy. We all have to make more effort to develop ways to exchange and promote African arts among our fellow Africans and the rest of the world if we want to see our artists gain the recognition that they deserve.  less
